When using an employment solicitor you will want to ensure that as much of the financial reward is kept for yourself and not eviscerated by the costs of bringing the necessary legal action. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to cut the costs of using an employment solicitor, without sacrificing any of the benefits.

The best thing you can do is prepare well for meetings with your employment solicitor; not only will this save you money but it will also speed up what is most likely a stressful process. Such preparation can be as simple as noting down a chronology of key events in your dispute and a list of questions you have for your employment solicitor. A more substantial contribution to your case would be gathering together copies of documents that your employment solicitor will find useful for your case. These are most likely to be correspondence with your employers (whether it be by email or letter), your employment contract and your employer's company policy.

Employment solicitors charge on an hourly rate so time is money. This means not just maximising the time spent in meetings but also on phone calls and cutting down on correspondence which is also charged for.

Employers are often keen to avoid taking matters to tribunal because of the cost and publicity, meaning that your employment solicitor may be able to help negotiate a settlement before a hearing is required. It can often be worth making a small compromise in compensation to bring the matter to a quick close.
